Department of Telecommunications Receives Motorola Solutions Foundation Grant

The Department of Telecommunications of AGH University of Science and Technology announces that it has received a grant for $40,000 USD from the Motorola Solutions Foundation, the charitable arm of Motorola Solutions, Inc. Through the grant, the Department will enhance the educational capabilities of its courses in the area of simulation-based performance analysis of dense LTE and Wi-Fi networks, reaching about 70 students annually. The Motorola Solutions Foundation awards grants each year to organizations, such as AGH University, which support and advance public safety programs and technology and engineering education initiatives.
“Motorola Solutions Foundation funding will help our Department better educate our students in the area of wireless network performance analysis” says Marek Natkaniec, the head of the Department. With the increasing number of (end-user) mobile devices, next-generation wireless access networks will need to be densified to cope with the emerging capacity problem. This implies smaller cells, coexistence of overlapping cells, and the proliferation of client devices. It is becoming necessary to educate future ICT graduates about these issues. Simulation tools constitute an ideal playground for analyzing LTE and Wi-Fi networks consisting of dense base stations/access points serving tens or even hundreds of users. “The funding provided by the Motorola Solutions Foundation will enable us to provide students with the computational power necessary to study such dense networks”, adds Marek Natkaniec.
This year, Motorola Solutions Foundation grants will support programs that help more than 3 million students, teachers, first responders and community members around the globe. There is a specific focus on providing grants to programs that impact underrepresented populations, including females, minorities, people with disabilities, veterans and others. “The Motorola Solutions Foundation is honored to and privileged to support the work of AGH University,” said Matt Blakely, executive director of the Motorola Solutions Foundation. “We believe in organizations that are fostering innovation, building partnerships and driving change, and we’re proud to be part of the positive impact they’re making in communities.”
